Bluffing in Poker Tournaments
One of
the tactics you will need to use in
poker tournaments is the bluff.
Most everyone is familiar with the
bluff, a bet designed to represent
strength when you are actually
weak, in the hopes that your
opponents will fold. Some players
feel that bluffing is the most
exciting strategy in poker, and the
most exhilarating when it works. No
limit Hold'em tournaments present
particularly good bluffing
opportunities, since you are able
to put an opponent at a decision
for their tournament life if you
have enough chips.
You do not need to be a frequent
bluffer to be successful in poker
tournaments. One or two well timed
bluffs that win you a key pot is
enough. Professionals vary widely
with respect to how often they
bluff, depending upon how it fits
into their style, and many
different styles are effective.
A rule of thumb is that if you are
constantly getting called when you
bluff, you are probably bluffing
too much. If you rarely get action
on your good hands, you need to
bluff more. Even bluffing to win a
small pot can be effective if it
lets opponents know you are capable
of bluffing. It is an important
part of varying your play, so
opponents do not know to run
whenever you have a strong hand.
If you are going to bluff, be sure
the situation is right. If you do
not have enough chips to threaten
anybody, you are not in a good
position to bluff. On the other
hand, if you have many more chips
than an opponent, giving you the
ability to threaten to eliminate
them, you are in a great position
to bluff. You also want to factor
in your position in the hand and
how loose or tight your opponents
are.
It is difficult to bluff short
stacks. If they have already
entered the pot, they may feel pot
committed even if they do not have
a premium hand. Some big stacks can
be bluffed, since even though they
have a lot of chips to spare, they
may protect them overzealously. The
middle stacks are usually the
easiest to bluff, since one mistake
can be the difference between
hanging on for dear life and
coasting into the money.
Like all tactics in
poker
tournaments, the bluff should be
used selectively. If you find the
right spots to bluff, you will
boost your overall chance of
tournament success. If you overuse
the bluff, it will quickly lose its
effectiveness over the course of
the tournament.
